Historical Society Blacksmiths
Blacksmiths have always been a compelling subject for us. There is something visually powerful about the combination of physical labour, fire, metal and craftsmanship, particularly when the craft has been refined over a lifetime.
For this project, we focused on quality over quantity, dedicating our time to creating a small number of strong hero images rather than simply documenting the process.
Working with two experienced blacksmiths in intense heat, we allowed them to do what they do best. The photography centred around the moments of impact, metal striking metal, sparks flying, hands shaping hot steel and the concentration required to create something from raw material.
The harsh workshop environment became an important part of the visual language. It allowed us to push the lighting, atmosphere and composition while staying true to the reality of the work. The result was a series of powerful portraits that celebrate both the physicality of the craft and the two men who have dedicated much of their lives to it.
Holy hell, Your a master in your right, we’ve never had image of us this good in 50 years of being blacksmiths.
